Installation cables EQQ and MMJ put to the test – which one comes out on top?

Reka Cables conducted a field test at the Onninen Basket 2025 fair, collecting feedback on the differences in stripability between EQQ and MMJ installation cables.

EQQ is a halogen-free installation cable that offers high fire safety and does not produce thick black smoke when burning. In contrast, MMJ—more familiar to installers—is PVC-insulated, which in fire situations emits dense black smoke and harmful gases.

Reka Cables is committed to transitioning to fully PVC-free production by the end of 2027.

Comparison Results

After the test, feedback on stripability was collected via an electronic form, and Microsoft’s AI assistant Copilot was asked to analyze the responses:

Number of Mentions Positive Comments Negative Comments
EQQ   27 19 4
MMJ   4 2 0

According to the comparison, EQQ received significantly more mentions and positive feedback than MMJ. Compared to MMJ, EQQ was perceived as:

  • Easier to strip
  • Smoother to handle
  • More comfortable in use
  • Better overall than MMJ

The general opinion favored EQQ, although a few comments noted it was slightly harder or stiffer. MMJ received no negative feedback and only a few mentions as being more flexible and easier than EQQ.

Reka Cables to Phase Out PVC Cables by End of 2027

Reka Cables has decided to discontinue the use of PVC-containing cables in its production by the end of 2027. This decision is based on the goal of improving fire safety and promoting sustainable construction.

Product Manager Marko Mäkelä expressed strong satisfaction with the positive feedback received for EQQ:

“The ease of stripping speeds up installation work, but EQQ’s fire safety is especially significant. As a halogen-free cable, it does not release harmful gases or thick black smoke in fire situations, which improves safety for both people and equipment. This makes EQQ an excellent choice for modern construction projects where safety and sustainability are prioritized.”
